Chinese Built and Natural Environments

After learning about Australian environments, we researched contrasting environments in China.

Built Environments

The Great Wall Of China: The Great Wall is one of the Great Wonders of the world. It was built 2 000 years ago during the Qin dynasty (201 BC to 206 BC). It was built by the ancient Chinese to keep invaders from other parts of Asia, in particular, the "Huns". It was a defence wall. The Great Wall was made out of bricks and stones. It is in China's capital, Beijing and runs in north China from east to west. It stretches 6 693 kilometres across mountains, ranges, deserts and plains of Northern China. The Geat Wall of China is the worlds' longest man made structure. Parts of it were restored by the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The Great Wall of China is not a continuous wall but is a collection of walls. Emperor Qin connected four fortification walls. Several walls refered to as The Great Wall of China were built since the 5th century B.C. Parts of this wall are so wide that 10 soldiers can walk side by side. It is visible from the moon and is one of the biggest construction sites ever completed. The Great Wall of China is now in ruins but some parts were rebuilt. It is a popular tourist attraction although it takes a long time to get from one end to the other. The Great Wall of China is not the only great wall.

The Terracotta Army: The Terracotta Army is located east of China's oldest cities, Xian. It was built by the First Emperor, Qin. The Terracotta Army lies approximately 1.4 km east of the main tomb, which contains other spectacular objects. He was buried in a large tomb surrounded by thousands of soldiers made of bronze or terracotta (which is clay).

The Qinghai Railway:The Qinghai railway is one of the highest railways in the world. It took 50 years to build. The Chinese have given it the nickname of Roof of the World.

The Forbidden City: This is where the Emperor's throne is. It is in the centre of Beijing. The city is huge.

The Temple Of Heaven: The Temple Of Heaven is on the south of China. Inside are the colours blue, yellow and white which represent heaven, earth and the people of the world. The Temple Of Heaven is actually a park and all day there are people doing kite flying, singing and playing games like chess and badminton.

Three Gorges Dam: The Three Gorges Dam can be found in the longest river in China: the Yangtze River. This is also the third longest river in the world. The dam is called the Three Gorges Dam beacuse there are three gorges beside the river. It winds through 6 3OO km of beautiful scenery. People live along its banks. Animals such as the Siberian Crane, Baiji Dolphin and the Sturgeon have become endangered species and may be driven to extinction, as a result of the dam.

The Summer Palace: The Summer Palace is in Beijing. Its gardens date from the Qin dynasty. The Allied Forces in World War II invaded Beijing and set fire to the gardens.

Natural Environments

The Gobi Desert: was "taking over" the rest of China. They made a wall of trees so it would stop growing in area.

Wolong National Nature Reserve: This panda conservation area is in Wolong. The pandas eat lots of bamboo and panda cake.
